The carrier was a type of military starship specifically designed to focus on the transportation of starships and troops. They were generally considered separate from capital ships of other classes, due to the lack of sufficient armament given their relative size.

Characteristics[]

Carriers ranged in size from 400 to 2000 meters. They were typically divided into two types: the starfighter carrier and the troop carrier. Both were dedicated to the transport of starfighters or troops, and most of their size was dedicated to that function. As such, they were generally weak on defensive weaponry or shielding, and required escort craft to keep them well defended. The starfighter carrier, especially, suffered from slower maneuverability and acceleration, due to the sheer mass and weight added by carrying in some cases hundreds of starfighters, which made them an easy target.

However, the benefit of operating a carrier was huge. Starfighter carriers could carry hundreds of starfighters, which was a deadly and powerful advantage in any large-scale engagement. Also, troop carriers were capable of quickly and efficiently dropping thousands of troops onto a planet or boarding operation, allowing a force to quickly move on its ground targets, even from space.

The carrier concept was not developed until well into the Triumvirate Era, when the massive militarization of the known galaxy demanded a medium in which such large numbers of starfighters or troops could be delivered. The destroyer class had actually already been developed, but military strategists felt that destroyers simply had devoted too much space to weaponry, and couldn't carry the numbers desired by military leaders. Carriers did have strong communication and coordination capabilities, and were often used as command ships during certain engagements, such as occupations or planetary assaults.
